Bigger and Better Technology

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

As with all technology, you always want something bigger and better. When I purchased my Dell Inspiron 9400, something bigger and better was just out of reach. My original goal was to wait around two years before upgrading my hardware… I lasted 14 months with this last one… not too bad.

With my phone, I bought a new Moto Q in the summer of 2007, I skipped out on the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition cause it was $800 or something crazy like that. Christoph just picked up a 8830 for himself, uber jealous - but only $400 when he got it - My Q cost me $400.

As per the previous post, I just purchased an iMac a couple weeks ago, but of course, I already have myself pumped for the next update, unfortunately, this one will cost $8000+I’d expect to run on something like this in 18 months, dual 30 inch displays. To the spec below, I would probably up the RAM to around 4-8 gigs, and slap in four 500GB disks - get them all RAID’ed up.

It’s all relative though, 18 months from now, Apples prices will be somewhat the same, but the hardware will be way better. Sounds awesome. Not sure how much larger, and useful more that 30 inch displays will be.

My New Rig

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Over the years, I have coped with many frustrations with the Windows PC world. Stability, performance, and consistency has always plagued my working environment throughout my IT career. It just drives me crazy when things don’t work, and I find myself wasting time, tinkering.

Back when I worked at the School District, I was an avid mac user, managing Xserv environments, and toting around a decently performing Powerbook G4 with me everywhere. When I began to work with the Supreme Court, I found myself in an exclusively Windows environment, not a Mac to be found. Over the years, I adapted, and ended up on PC - Windows XP, Windows 2003 as my primary work stations.

Since joining PHXX, my primary workstation has been a Dell Inspiron 9400, Core 2 Duo 2.0ghz, 2 gigs of ram, 100 gig 7200 RPM hard drive, 256 meg NVIDIA 7900GS - Windows Vista Business. After dealing with Vistas crap for about 3 months (I “upgraded” from Windows XP) - I decided it was time for a change of scenery… maybe even a return to my roots…

I purchased my new machine last week. Simply put, it’s a beautiful thing. Everything just works. More on my love affair with Leopard later.
